If you’ve been incubating your business on your own it can be both an exciting and daunting time taking on your first employee. But how do you know when the time is right?

To start with don’t rush into taking on your first employee. Tempting though it may be to take someone on when you are under pressure a hasty decision is rarely a good one. Instead:

  1. Consider recruiting your first employee with someone that has the ability to step into your shoes. If they have similar skills to you, share your vision and values, are passionate, flexible and have the ability to teach others. They will free you up to focus on growing your business and can be relied upon to support subsequent employees and managers.
  2. Recruit when the job they will be doing will reasonably make money for your business (or save it).
  3. Recruit when you need particular skills e.g to deliver your product or service (e.g designers or developers), the marketing of it or supporting it (e.g customer service). It is also worth investigating options. Fir example you could recruit a freelancer or fixed term contractor. The daily rate may be higher, but it will give you the flexibility to evaluate the benefits in a more flexible way before transitioning to a full time employee.
